Hosting Workshops

Do you have an innovation or design/making related event you’d like to have at the Makerspace (e.g. workshop, competition, makeathon, etc.)?

We would really enjoy hosting and supporting your event as long as it:

[-] Is related to design, innovation, making, engineering….

[-] Involves students, faculty, staff, etc. from the UW-Madison College of Engineering. If not, we encourage you to collaborate with a Student Org within the College of Engineering (more info here).

[-] Is composed of only members of the UW-Madison community (we don’t typically host events for non-affiliated groups or individuals due to liability).

[-] Does not conflict with an already scheduled event.

[-] Does not exceed our capacity (depending on the details of the event, likely <= 75 people).

[-] Has been scheduled with sufficient notice (1 week or more).

May the attendees of an event use the machines / fabrication equipment in the Makerspace?
In short no, unless they have the appropriate permit (blue or red). Obtaining a valid permit requires a fee and training. For more information on obtaining a permits go here. To see which machines require a permit go here. Note that you do not need a permit be in the area outside the machine tool area.

Although, attendees can’t directly use the machine / fabrication tools they may observe approved demonstrations. Any demonstration for students who do not hold a permit must be approved by the shop manager.

How do I get approval to give a demonstration that uses machine / fabrication equipment?
To avoid double booking the space and to prepare the appropriate safety equipment contact the shop manager with the following information:
1) Who is giving the demonstration?
2) How may people is the demonstration for?
3) What tools will the demonstrators be using?
Note: a demonstration during an event does not authorize / qualify the attendee to then use the equipment themselves.

What if I want to give a demonstration that doesn’t use machine / fabrication equipment?
To avoid double booking the space contact the shop manager with the following information:
1) Who is giving the demonstration?
2) How may people is the demonstration for?

  • We strive to work collaboratively with student organizations related to engineering, design, innovation, start-ups and general making. For a full list of College of Engineering (CoE) related student organizations go here.

Are you a student org interested in hosting a workshop or event at the Makerspace? If so, we may be able to fund the event. It must:

[-] Be open to all CoE

[-] Have broad interest / appeal

[-] Be related to engineering, design, innovation, start-ups or general making

As an example, INSIGHT WISCONSIN ran a makeathon recently at the Makerspace and it was largely funded by the Makerspace.

Have an idea? Please email it to:

Note: In our effort to support a wide variety of learning and making opportunities we are unable to provide permanent space to student orgs. But we encourage you to come and use our space regularly and we’d be happy to help you host events that align with the goals of the Makerspace. Questions? Please contact the shop manager.
