Fusion Troubleshooting

Read on to find solutions to the most common problems students have…

I’m trying to reserve a mill/lathe for Intro to Machining after completing my Canvas quizzes, but I can’t. Why not?

99% of the time, this is because you haven’t yet completed Intro to Shop Tools, which is a prerequisite for Intro to Machining. Completing the Intro to Shop Tools quizzes isn’t enough, you must also have completed the hands-on session where you make the robot head. Once your attendance at that session has processed, you’ll be able to make mill/lathe reservations for your Intro to Machining test piece.

We try to avoid this situation by asking before you take the Intro to Machining quiz in Canvas whether you’ve completed Intro to Shop Tools or not. Answering this question honestly helps us avoid these confusing situations!

I just completed the (Intro to Shop Tools, MIG Welding, Wood Saws, etc…) session and don’t see it in my profile on Fusion. Why not?

The process of updating a student’s training status often takes up to 24 hours, and in the case of large classes, up to 48 hours. If for some reason this timing isn’t fast enough for you, you can email or come into the lab and tell us when you took your training, and we can verify your attendance/manually grant you the training status.

How do I prove to my instructor/PI that I completed certain training?

Go to shops.engr.wisc.edu and sign in at the upper right-hand corner of the page. From there, click on your name and select “Profile” from the menu. Providing a screenshot of the training listed in the “Memberships” section should suffice as evidence of completion. If there are any problems, please reach out to us.

Note: we are no longer issuing physical permits upon completion of Intro to Shop Tools (f/k/a Red Permit) or Intro to Machining (f/k/a Green Permit). Because this is new as of Fall 2023, some instructors may have legacy instructions about deliverables if they require our training. Rest assured you’re not missing anything, the single source of truth about the training you’ve completed is in your Fusion profile.

I’m trying to sign up for a training session but don’t see any listed. Can you help?

This could be for one of two reasons:

  1. For any training session that requires the completion of Canvas quizzes ahead of time, the link to register for that training session is only available in Canvas at the end of the module. Do not attempt to register for any session directly from Fusion if the title includes “(Register in Canvas)” and the description indicates that no sessions will be listed there.
  2. It’s possible that none have been listed! We try to stay ahead of demand as best as we can, but you’ll often find that (especially for welding training) you may need to wait a bit. MIG and TIG welding both have interest forms linked from Canvas, and that’s the best way to let our team know you’re waiting for training. If you’re looking for a different kind of training and don’t see any sessions (or all sessions are full), please reach out to us and we’ll do our best to list new sessions. Note that we usually cannot accommodate scheduling requests for training sessions, as our instructors are also busy students with their own hectic schedules!

I’m looking at my profile and don’t see the (Red Permit/Green Permit), which I know I completed in the past. Where did it go?

It’s still there, it’s just under a different name. As of the 2023-24 academic year, the Red Permit is now Intro to Shop Tools, and the Green Permit is now Intro to Machining. If you’ve completed one or both of these in the past and don’t see it listed in your profile, please reach out to us and we’ll try to debug it. Our system should reflect exactly what EMU had in its records – we haven’t yet found an exception to this, but it’s always possible.

I can’t make a reservation for the machine I want, why not?

This can happen for a few reasons:

  • If you don’t see the machine listed at all in on the Bookings page, it means you don’t have the appropriate eligibility to reserve that machine or that the machine is down/unreservable for some reason. If you think that’s an error, please let us know.
  • The TIG welders and CNC machines in TEAM Lab do not currently have publicly available reservation slots, so you won’t see those show up on the Bookings page. TIG welders are generally available (first-come, first-served) and the CNC Lab’s schedule is managed by Jay.
  • If you see the machine listed and there are slots that all say “Unavailable”, it means that it’s been booked. Try another day/machine!
