Overview
Our Intro to Shop Tools module provides introductory training on machines like drill presses, sanders, and band saws. Students will understand safety considerations pertaining to basic machine tools and feel confident navigating projects using this equipment in our shops. This training only needs to be completed once – but we’re always happy to provide a quick refresher!
Privileges
- Use everything in the ECB shop except the lathes and mills (which require the Intro to Machining) or equipment that requires other specialty training
- Use everything in the Wendt shop except equipment that requires specialty training
Steps to complete Intro to Shop Tools
(If you haven’t yet completed the Lab Orientation, do that first!)
- Complete all the pre-lab quizzes in Canvas
- Enroll in and attend an Intro to Shop Tools session (see below for more information). The link to enroll will be provided after you complete step 1.
- (Optional, but highly recommended!!) Complete the post-lab in Canvas! This will solidify everything you learned in your hands-on session and best prepare you to make good use of the tools for your own projects in the future.
Time to Complete
- The Intro to Shop Tools can usually completed within a day or two – one for taking the Canvas quizzes and another for the hands-on session and post-lab.
Hands-on Intro to Shop Tools Session
This hands-on session introduces basic fabrication techniques and equipment including workholding techniques, vertical band saws, drill presses, and sanders, as well as how to tap (internally thread by hand) a part. Participants will make a fun test piece during the session to get hands-on experience with the tools.
Location
This hands-on session meets in the ECB Shop – just head downstairs and you’ll see someone who can check you in. For individuals completing this as part of a class (e.g. InterEGR 170, ME 201, etc…), you may meet in your classroom to begin the training. Follow your instructor’s instructions!
